Reading Social Club: Uncolonized Latinas

A Conversation with Valeria Aloe

This month's book is Uncolonized Latinas: Transforming our Mindsets and Rising Together by Valeria Aloe.

In order to improve the world, we must first start with ourselves. This book takes us on a journey to do just that. Along the way we meet immigrant Latinas and daughters of immigrants who, through trials and tribulations, have uncolonized their limiting mindsets and have found their true selves.

This book guides us to:
Embrace our individual and collective greatness, as we honor our stories and our ancestry.
Become more aware of the limiting cultural narratives that have been running us.
As a Latina, thrive in your career and life from a place of self-esteem, as you learn from those Latinas who figured out how to navigate the system.
As an Ally, feel confident and become more effective when mentoring diverse talent.

Through this journey we can learn how to experience transformational change—open our heart, mind, and eyes.

Anti-Blackness in our Communities of Color

A Black History Month Conversation

Racism has dehumanized people of color for centuries. These systems have disadvantaged Black and Latino communities and created a zero-sum view of liberation. Join SimplyLeadLLC to unlearn the roots of systemic racism and strive for collective liberation. We will unpack how communities of color have been insulated from and dehumanized by each other through systems that prioritize whiteness above all. Come together to move towards freedom and re-empower the Black and Latinx members of your community.

About SimplyLead LLC: SimplyLead was started by two queer women of color who believe perpetual systemic inequities trap potential and mute expression. SimplyLead believes in a dynamic, co-designed, action driven approach that centers our common humanity in order to address these inequities. SimplyLead seeks to inform, educate and support organizations focused on creating antiracist spaces and empowering marginalized communities. We work in particular to dismantle deep rooted inequities in educational institutions and equip organizations with the tools to address internal and societal inequities through training, equity audits, and comprehensive mission development. We believe in dynamic, action-driven change co-designed by those at the margins. SimplyLead centers our common humanity across all of our work, with the hope of creating a better future for everyone.

About the Latinista: Founded in NYC in 2012, with the mission of providing dynamic professional development workshops for women invested in: career & leadership development, building community and learning new career skills.

Latina Equal Pay Day

On average, Latinx women suffer from a 45 percent pay gap. Studies state that Latinas lose over $1 million dollars in a lifetime which impacts their day to day spending and savings. Aside from working the entire previous calendar year, October 21st, represents how far into 2021,a Latinx woman must work to earn what a white non-Hispanic male made in the 2020 year alone. Gender and race equality and equity are critical in organizations that want to perform at the highest level.

Through www.latinasequalpayday.org, Women of Color in the Workplace works to provide visibility and a voice to Latinx women's experiences.

Join us on October 21st from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm eastern for a discussion about the experiences of Latinas at work and what we can do as women of color, allies, leaders, and companies to close the pay gap ONCE AND FOR ALL.

In partnership with Women of Color in the Workplace.

ReTHINK Your Finances during Your Camino to Fair Pay

Yoly Magaña-Valencia is the founder of Latinas Who Trade, a nonprofit, created to teach the Latinx Community how to invest and manage their money.  Yoly is a believer in financial literacy for all and wants to make sure no family is left behind--Latinas Who Trade is her way to give back and empower her community.

  • Discover the power of investing, gain confidence in doing it, and learn why it is better than holding your money in cash.

  • Gain a better understanding of tax-advantaged accounts and how to make the most of each dollar.

  • Spend on what matters most to you, forget the rest!

This event is in support of Latina Equal Pay Day which takes place on October 21, 2021. ReTHINK your finances to ensure you're getting every single dollar that you deserve!
